Can a wet carpet grow mold?

What to Do When Your Carpet Gets Wet

Wet carpet can grow mold. Mold can begin to grow in an area with excess moisture within 48 hours, and the risk rises faster in warm, closed or basement rooms.

How much you need to do depends on three things: how much water, what kind of water and how long it has been there. This page shows what to do first and how to tell when drying at home is no longer enough.

How Fast Does Mold Grow on Wet Carpet

Mold needs moisture, something to feed on and time. Carpet has dust, skin cells and food crumbs for it to feed on.

  • Within 24 hours, act. Remove the water and start airflow.
  • At 24 to 48 hours, the risk of mold and odour starts to rise.
  • Beyond 48 hours, check the padding and subfloor, and expect to replace padding that stayed soaked.

What Kind of Water Is It

This decides what is safe to do yourself.

Water source What to do
Clean water, such as a spilled drink, a supply line leak or a window left open in rain Dry it yourself if you act fast and it is a small area
Water from a washing machine, dishwasher or bathtub overflow Dry quickly, check the padding, and be cautious about how long it sat
Sewage, a drain backup or flood water Do not dry it yourself. Contact a water damage restoration company and your insurer. Carpet that touched this kind of water is usually replaced

What to Do in the First Hour

  1. Stop the source. Shut off the water if it is a leak, and move the carpet away from the wet area if you can.
  2. Remove standing water. Use a wet and dry vacuum if the water is clean, or press clean towels down firmly. Do not rub.
  3. Take furniture off the wet area. Wood and metal legs can stain.
  4. Start airflow. Point fans across the carpet surface, not straight down.
  5. Run a dehumidifier in the room with doors and windows closed. Open windows only if the outside air is drier than the air inside.
  6. Check under the carpet. Lift a corner if you can do it without damaging the installation and feel the padding and floor.

A dry surface over wet padding is the most common mistake. The padding holds most of the water.

How to Dry Carpet and Padding

  • Keep air moving for at least 24 hours, then check again.
  • Use a dehumidifier to pull moisture out of the air and fibres.
  • Heat helps moderately. Do not aim a heater straight at the carpet, because it can warp or shrink some fibres.
  • Stay off damp carpet. Footsteps press water deeper into the padding.
  • Do not put furniture, boxes or a rug back until it is dry.
  • If the padding is soaked, it usually needs to come out. Surface drying will not reach it.

You can tell it is dry when the carpet feels the same temperature as dry floor nearby and has no smell. Press a dry paper towel against it for a few seconds. If it comes away damp, keep drying.

Signs Mold Is Starting

  • A musty, earthy or basement smell that does not go away
  • Dark or discoloured patches, or stains that reappear after drying
  • Edges that lift, ripple or feel soft
  • A sticky or tacky feel
  • Allergy symptoms that worsen in that room

How to Remove Damp Smell from Carpet

Damp smell means moisture is still in the carpet, padding or floor. Treat the cause, not the scent.

  1. Dry everything first. A smell treatment on damp carpet only masks the problem.
  2. Find the source. Check for leaks, condensation or a past spill under furniture.
  3. Clean once it is dry. A residue left from the water or a dirty spill holds odour. Use a product that suits the fibre and test it on a hidden spot.
  4. Use the right product. Baking soda can absorb a mild odour on dry carpet and must be vacuumed up completely. Vinegar can harm some fibres and its smell lingers on damp carpet. Pet urine needs an enzyme product. See how to clean pet stains from carpet.
  5. Check again for a few days. If the smell returns in the morning or humid weather, moisture is still hidden.

Never mix household cleaners. For other smells, see our guide to carpet odour removal.

When Drying at Home Is Not Enough

Get help if:

  • The water reached the padding, the subfloor or several square metres of carpet
  • The carpet is still damp after a full day of airflow
  • The smell stays after 48 hours of drying
  • The water was dirty or came from a sewer or flood
  • You can see mold
  • You rent, in which case also tell your landlord in writing and keep dated photos

A restoration company measures moisture and dries the carpet and floor with specialized equipment. For widespread or contaminated water, that is the right service.

When a Professional Clean Helps

Once the carpet and padding are fully dry and the leak is fixed, a smell or dullness may remain. A professional hot water extraction clean can remove the residue that holds odour. Nettoyage Impérial cleans fitted carpets in Montreal, Laval, the North Shore and the South Shore with truck mounted extraction, and rugs in shop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can wet carpet grow mold?

Yes. If carpet and padding stay wet for more than 24 to 48 hours, mold can start. Warm, closed rooms and basements raise the risk.

How long can carpet stay wet before mold grows?

Mold can begin within 48 hours. After that, check the padding and expect to replace padding that stayed soaked.

Will my carpet dry on its own?

A small, clean water spill on thin carpet may. Anything that reached the padding needs fans, a dehumidifier and sometimes removal of the padding.

Does baking soda dry out wet carpet?

No. It can absorb a mild odour on dry carpet but does not remove water or dry the padding.

Will damp carpet smell go away?

It goes away when the carpet, padding and floor are fully dry and the source is fixed. If it stays after a couple of days of drying, hidden moisture or growth is likely.

Is it safe to sleep in a room with wet carpet?

Dry it first. If you have asthma, allergies or a weakened immune system, or if you can see or smell mold, speak to a doctor and avoid the room until it is dry and checked.

Should I replace carpet after water damage?

Replace it if the water was dirty, the padding stayed wet for days or mold has grown. Carpet from a quick, clean water spill can often be saved.

Can I use a rental carpet cleaner on wet carpet?

No. It adds more water. Remove the water and dry the carpet first.
